Traverse Tower

HGL has been involved in projects utilising Traverse Towers for many years with varying degrees of success. Generally we found that the commercially available systems were frail, awkward to use and often required large external control system electronics.

In 2016 the company decided to design and market its own Traverse Tower family of products, initially for Pyrometry Applications in the Gas Turbine marketplace, but with a vision of providing multiple modular products for multiple application spaces.

Traverse Tower is a twin-axis system using absolute position encoders and direct drives motors for high-precision and high-speed performance.

The Control Electronics is provided as a small removable module which directly attaches to the Motor Drive and Tray modules. It provides precision control at speeds up to 100mm/s (100 degrees/s) with control, data (position & environmental) and power (PoE) provided via the single Ethernet Port.

The Traverse Tower family are designed to be used directly on engines with the Encoders and Electronics being able to operate to 125C. For applications with greater temperatures HGL can provide a remotely mounted Electronics module.

The TT180 provides a 180mm traverse in the Radial direction, HGL can provide models with shorter or longer traverses as required. All models include full 360 degree Yaw motion.

The TT180 supports traversing speeds of up to 50mm/s with positional accuracies of sub-0.1mm. Yaw speeds of up to 100 degrees/s are supported with accuracies of sub-0.1degrees.

Twin axis motion is coordinated (where required) to allow simultaneous arrival by both axes at a measurement point. The Traverse Tower family all support on board multi-point sequences and / or continuous traverse operations all via a simple programmable interface or via HGL’s TT Base Unit.

Fast and Accurate

Radial Axis:
Speed: 35mm/s - expandable to 100mm/s
Accuracy: +/-0.025mm
Yaw Axis:
Speed: 100deg/s
Accuracy: +/-0.1deg

Measurement Probe

Built-in support for automated in-vehicle traverse length detection. Pairs with HGL XNGV Probes for a wireless FOD free simple way to measure the maximum traverse length.

Flexible Operating Modes

The Control Module supports independent manual control of each axis, programmable sequences of up to 16 steps with variable pause periods at each step, and continuous traverse with independent or synchronised axes.

Emergency Eject

Multiple Emergency Retract mechanisms:
Host driven Ethernet Command
Physical button (requires HGL Base Unit)
Power Dropped / Cut Ethernet - uses built-in
SuperCapacitor power storage.

Rugged

Intended for use on vehicle with relatively harsh vibration and high temperatures. The electronics module and Absolute Encoders are rated to 125C
